Drama & Hip-Hop

Hilary Cahill, Director of the Dublin Academy of Dramatic Arts (DADA) has been teaching extra curricular Drama to RJS students for over 20 years.  We recently added Hip Hop for Forms 2 to 6, taught by DADA’s dance teacher Michael.  All students taking DADA classes have the opportunity to be part of DADA’s annual end of year show at the Civic Theatre.

Our LEGO® Technic afterschool programmes follow our ethos of “We Learn, We Build, We Play”

We Learn: The session starts with a short presentation. Our LEGO® Tutors present and discuss the scientific vocabulary and concepts that underpin the LEGO® Technic build. Our aim is to develop childrens relationships between Science and everyday life.

We Build: The children build their own motorised LEGO® Technic build. Each week will see the children undertake a new challenge. With 4 different degrees of difficulty for each build, the afterschool programme is appropriate from Junior Infants to Sixth class.

We Play: The children enjoy a structured playtime with their build. During this time, our LEGO® Tutors encourage children to use their imagination to modify and enhance their build, and discuss and explore the effects of the changes they have made.

Starting in September 2022…

We are pleased to announce that we will be adding a sewing/crafting class and Nutty Scientist classes to our program from September.

Handwork

There are many opportunities for self-expression in creative handwork which includes a variety of crafts. We have a recently refurbished art room and free expression in painting is encouraged throughout the school. An exhibition of pupils’ work is held every year in June. We invite Art zone every year, to engage with a chosen project with each class. In September, we will also be adding a new sewing and crafting class before and after school.

Educational Trips

There are various outings throughout the year to such places as the Museums, Trinity College, the National Gallery, Christ Church Cathedral, concert performances, The Ark and Bull Island as well as annual excursions further a field.

Library

Children in all classes are encouraged to use and value the school library and from Form 1 pupils may borrow books. Each class enjoys its own class library.

Computers

Each class is equipped with its own PC and interactive board. Children are given regular access to develop new computer skills, progressing from use of CD ROM games to typing skills and using applications. Provision for IT in the school is continually developing to reflect modern advances. We have a highly skilled group of parents to run ‘Coder Dojo’ club every second weekend, where children learn scratch programming.

Sport

Games after school is optional. Children in Forms 2 to 6 can play Hockey in Three Rock in Rathfarnham on a Tuesday and Thursday after school during Terms 1 and 2. In the summer term, children may go to CYM/Terenure Sports Club, where they can choose between cricket, tennis, athletics and rounders. Junior and Senior Sports Days are held in June in CYM.
